Spring Break is next week! 🌺🌸🌼 This means that no teachers will be on site/available and that there is no lunch service. We encourage you to take this time to catch up on school work, self care, or family time - whatever break means to you! Centers reopen and lunch service resumes on Monday, March 8th.

Jesse Owens (1913 - 1980) was a record-setting track and field athlete. In 1935, Jesse Owens made sporting history when he broke five world records and equalled a sixth in the space of 45 minutes. One of these world records, 8.13m in the long jump, would last for 25 years. He cemented his status as a sports legend after his performance at the 1936 Olympics held in Berlin, Germany, where he earned four gold medals, set records, and was the winningest athlete at the games. His success was especially poignant because Adolf Hitler had planned to use the Berlin Games as a way to support his belief in the superiority of the Aryan race; this plan was shattered by Owens’ decisive and impressive victories in Berlin. He was hailed as a hero in both Germany and the United States, not only for his athletic feats but for his grace and his ability to compete with the leader of the Nazi party watching. Owens was the first American to win four gold medals at a single Olympics - a record that remained unbroken for over 48 years.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe (1915 - 1973) was a singer, songwriter and prolific guitarist, often referred to as “the Godmother of Rock & Roll”. Her pioneering sound, which included an unconventional style and distinctive voice, laid the foundation for rock and roll as we know it. She was the first to pair electric instruments with classic gospels songs, creating a new sound that would become an international sensation. While she was wildly popular in her time, her fame and name faded in the 1960s as a new generation of artists expanded on her style without necessarily publicly recognizing her influence. Tharpe’s style and music notably influenced the likes of Prince, Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Johnny Cash and countless others. Sister Rosetta Tharpe was posthumously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2018, a long overdue recognition of her contributions to the history of modern music.

Reverend Dr. James Lawson, Jr. (1928 - ) is an American activist and educator. He was one of the leading proponents of non-violence within the Civil Rights Movement. After being a conscientious objector during the Korean War, Lawson spent several years teaching in India just a few years after the assassination of Gandhi in 1948. There, he further immersed himself in the pursuit of a massive nonviolent revolution - a concept he was familiar with before his journey, but was more directly visible in mid-century India. He spearheaded a nonviolent direct-action campaign against racial discrimination in Nashville and helped to build momentum for the Civil Rights movement in the south. He was expelled from Vanderbilt University in 1960 for his activism. Lawson has spent his later life in Los Angeles, where he served as a Methodist pastor until 1999, and has continued his activism and advocacy since. He has been active in the labor movement, and the American Civil Liberties Union, as well as movements for reproductive choice and LGBTQ rights. He continues to spearhead movements and train activists in the practices of non-violence.
